Pune, Maharashtra. Reminded me of George Fernandes, the then external affairs minister, sending Coca Cola packing out of India in the late seventies. Of course, Coke is back, but in the years of its absence, Thums Up, an Indian cola was created and it continues to be a strong brand and is now owned by, yes, Coca Cola!

A narrow road shoots off the Jejuri-Pune highway and leads to Jadhavgadh, a fort converted into a hotel. This man welcomes/solicits guests dressed up as a Mawla, Maratha warrior. I imagine him in battle. The enemy soldier is about to strike him when he pauses, looks at his name tag and then strikes addressing him by name.

Hinglish 01
Call me a purist or a relic or both but I have never understood the reasons for writing Hindi in Roman script. The advertising community in India started the trend in the early nineties. Was it sheer laziness to send out for Devnagri typesetting or was it carrying forward the tradition of Hindi movie posters? I remember an incident from my childhood. I must have been eight or nine years old and as I was walking to school two street kids stopped me and asked me to read out the name of the Hindi movie on a poster. That's the first time I noticed that the poster did not have the name in Hindi. One can understand the practice for SMS text or while typing on the computer because the Devnagri keyboard is tough. But why in other media?

Hinglish makes no sense to the guy who can read Hindi, but not English. Neither to the guy who can read English but doesn't understand Hindi. Who is Hinglish talking to?
